One of the things that works in my family is music. My kids love songs and I've learned (the hard way!) that if I put on one of their favorite CDs at 5pm, right when I'm starting to detach so that I can make dinner and get organized before bedtime, they get into a groove. They'll sing or dance around and get their wiggles out, or they'll sit and play while they're listening, and it really affects their mood and helps mellow them out. They still get into squabbles and need help here and there, but for the most part we avoid the witching hour, which makes the evening sooo much more enjoyable for me!
